Making an Impact

First Year, Class of 2029, Psychology

"This scholarship means the world to me. It eases the financial burden I carry and allows me to focus more on my studies and personal growth instead..."

I am most excited to branch out of New York and experience life in a completely new environment. Being low-income and growing up in Harlem, my days were often filled with news of violence and arrests in the neighborhood I call home. As much as I love New York City, it didn’t always feel like a place where I could thrive. I often felt stuck in a cycle that was hard to escape. Coming to Miami gave me hope. Hope that I could build a better future for myself and my family, hope that I could grow beyond my circumstances, and hope that success was truly possible. The University of Miami isn’t just a school to me; It’s a symbol of opportunity and transformation. UM’s strong and supportive community has already shown me that I belong here, and that I’m taking real steps toward the life I’ve always dreamed of. Being here makes me proud, proud of how far I’ve come, and proud that I’m doing right by my family and my future.

My professional goal is to become a child and family case social worker. I want to dedicate my life to supporting children, one of the most vulnerable and often overlooked groups in society. Growing up, I saw how much a person’s environment can shape their future, and I want to be part of creating positive change in the lives of young people who face challenges similar to mine. I believe that with the right guidance, care, and access to resources, every child can flourish. Through social work, I hope to advocate for those who cannot always advocate for themselves and to make a meaningful difference in my community and beyond.

Coming to the University of Miami was my dream, my top choice since the moment I began the college process. But as a low-income student, I knew it would be financially difficult, and that I’d have to rely on my hard work and determination to make it happen. Even now, I am the one responsible for paying my tuition through a monthly payment plan because I know my parents don’t have the means to help financially. This scholarship means the world to me. It eases the financial burden I carry and allows me to focus more on my studies and personal growth instead of worrying about making ends meet. It’s not just money, it’s a reminder that people believe in my potential, that my hard work is being recognized, and that I’m not alone in this journey. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and determined to make the most of it.
